Durham, NC

Old North Durham

Old North Durham is a mostly residential historic neighborhood just north of downtown Durham. Open Durham puts its edges at the abandoned Duke Beltline rail line to the north, Avondale Drive to the east, Washington Street to the west, and a line along East Geer Street, Broadway and the Little Five Points commercial node to the south. Development began in the 1880s and 1900s, when Brodie Duke subdivided his land and the Durham Traction Company trolley line along North Mangum Street brought growth. The adjoining North Durham-Duke Park National Register district, listed in 1985, is mostly one- and two-story frame houses from the 1890s to 1930s in Queen Anne, Late Victorian and Bungalow styles. Because the interior is residential, shops, bars and cafes cluster on its edges: the North Mangum Street strip around Old Five Points, and Geer Street. Duke Park at West Knox Street anchors the green space, and the Ellerbe Creek greenway starts near Trinity Avenue. Durham Central Park and its Saturday farmers market are a short walk or bike ride south.

Honest trade-offs

  • Most of the neighborhood is residential, so cafes, bars and restaurants sit on the edges at North Mangum Street and Geer Street rather than on interior blocks.
  • Mangum Street is one-way with street parking, and Discover Durham advises looking south of Geer Street for a spot, so parking near the strip takes some searching.
  • Houses built from the 1890s to the 1930s are old, so maintenance, inspection and renovation costs are a real consideration when buying here.
  • No verified current price figure is included here, so check live listings and recent sales before budgeting for a purchase.
  • Walk Score's Transit Score of 56 is well below the Walk Score of 88, so errands outside the Mangum corridor are easier by car or bike.
